We interviewed Mathias a Londoner who studied linguistics in Leeds, who has come to France to work as a teaching assistant to find out whether he wants to become fully-fledged teacher in the future.
Leeds is a city in the northeast of England. It is like a little version of London but more walkable, instead of taking the tube everywhere you can walk from the town centre to the suburbs. He studied in Leeds for 4 years and has gotten to know the city really well. He made a lot of connections and discovered his love for climbing and badminton. He said he likes badminton because it is a team sport that focuses on communication, and climbing because of pretty colours of the boulders, but also because it uses the brain and muscles at the same time.
He wanted to come to France because he liked the country and because he wanted to learn the language, but most importantly it was the cheapest to travel to. He thinks that French people are quite nice, but they seem to be a little bit less open and outgoing than the British.
During his holiday, he celebrated Halloween with his friends from Leeds that had come to visit him in Paris, and on the 5th of November, he dressed up as the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street and baked some cookies for his friends.
When Mathias came to France, he didn’t really miss a lot of things except for his family and friends, but most of all Jaffa Cakes, in the interview, he went off on a rant about how they don’t exist in France and about the whole argument surrounding whether they are cakes or biscuits. It might be very hard for him to live in France without these things in his life.
Hopefully Mathias will enjoy the rest of his time in France and we hope that maybe he will succeed in his objectives in life.
